Session 7
THE EGO
In this module, you will begin to clarify the relationship between mindfulness and the self. At the deepest level, your mindfulness practice can help you cultivate a different relationship with self in which you develop an observing stance that can become stronger after repeated and consistent mindfulness practice. As a result, you will be able to take a step back from all kinds of thoughts, including identity-related thoughts.
You will:
- Understand the “Shopping Cart Metaphor” and how that impacts identity and makes room for a more dynamic sense of self
- Understand the expression of the ego, and how to know you are operating from ego.
- Become more aware of the stories about the self and the difference from the stories themselves so that you can transcend the ego.
- Experience exercises that will allow you to experience the difference between the self as a story and the self as an observer.

- Listen to the training and do the exercise called, “Observing the Ego” in the workbook.
- Complete the seated and loving-kindness meditation as often as possible this week.
- Complete the breathing space coping exercise 3x per day.
